Mayor Lisa Crate was appointed by the Township Council to serve as Brick Township’s Mayor on February 28, 2023. Prior to being appointed Mayor, she served on the Township Council since from 2016 until her appointment as Mayor. She was elected to the Council in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. She served as Council President in 2020 and 2021 and as Council Vice-President in 2018, 2019 and 2022.

During her time on Council, Mayor Crate served on the Council’s Business and Finance, Land Use, Ethics, Economic Development, Public Works and Recreation Committees. Through her work on these committees, Mayor Crate was an integral part of many initiatives and programs that have improved Brick Township. Mayor Crate consistently championed fiscally conservative and responsible practices as well as common-sense government.

Mayor Crate served as the Council’s Board of Education, Library, Senior Citizen, Sustainable Brick and Veterans liaison.

Mayor Crate is also an animal lover. She strongly supports the Township’s ban on ‘puppy mills,’ has coordinated events to raise funds for K-9 Narcan and trauma units and is a volunteer Board member for Tooney’s Last Resort – a local animal rescue.

Mayor Crate is a 28-year resident of Brick Township. Her and her husband have two children who attend Brick Township Public Schools. She has been an educator for over 30 years and currently serves as the President of the Jackson Education Association and is a member of the Ocean County Council of Educators. She has been recognized as the Teacher of the Year and the District Educational Services Professional of the Year.

CONSERVATIVE FISCAL RECORD

As a member of the Council’s Business and Finance Committee, Mayor Crate worked with the administration and Council to implement conservative fiscal practices. Over her eight years on Council, municipal spending increased $13.9 million compared to an increase of over $29.6 million during the eight years prior to her time on Council. Additionally, tax levy growth was 55% lower during her time on Council than the previous eight years. During her time on the Council, she also supported the administration’s debt reduction plan that was successful in reducing the township’s debt by over $30 million – a reduction of 18%.

FIGHTING DEVELOPMENT

As a member of the Council’s Land Use Committee, Mayor Crate worked on the creation of a Village Zone, which was created to protect the township from further high-density residential development and allowed for commercial and residential uses in areas of town along Mantoloking Road, Drum Point Road and Herbertsville Road. She also supported the Township’s partnership with the Ocean County Land Trust to purchase 31-acres of pristine land to stop the development of nearly five dozen homes.

SUPPORT OF VETERANS

Mayor Crate has been a strong advocate for veterans. She served as the Council’s veteran liaison, worked with local a local veteran to create Hometown Hero banners that honor Brick residents who have lost their lives defending our nation, advocated for free beach badges for veterans and helped Brick be recognized as a “We Value our Veterans” community.

BRINGING BRICK TOGETHER

One of Mayor Crate’s priorities is to foster a greater sense of community. Her motto is “Brick is a big city with a small-town feel.” As a member of the Council’s Recreation Committee, she has been an integral part of several park renovation projects, is credited with the addition of the Touch-a-Truck event held at the National Night Out celebration and has been a staunch supporter of the Recreation Department and community events including SummerFest, the Brick Farmers Market and more. Mayor Crate is planning on hosting the community’s first Longest Table Event this fall.

    The Township has several boards, committees and commissions that offer residents the opportunity to give back to the community and help shape Brick Township’s future. Mayor Crate and the Township Council regularly seek interested citizens for vacancies on these boards.
